Gas Station Rewards Programs Explained

Station-branded loyalty programs can add $0.03 to $0.25 per gallon on top of your credit card rewards. Here is how they work and when independent stations beat the branded price.
Major Branded Station Programs
Shell
Shell Fuel Rewards- Base discount

Earn Fuel Rewards by dining at partner restaurants, buying partner gift cards, and shopping at Shell. Members on the Gold or Platinum tier earn $0.05 or $0.10/gal base discount on every fill-up. Partner purchases can stack for a total discount of up to $0.25/gal per transaction.
BP / Amoco
BPme Rewards- Base discount
- $0.05/gal on every fill-up after first 10 gallons
- Bonus potential
- 5 points per gallon (100 points = $0.05/gal)
BPme Rewards issues points on every gallon purchased. Points accumulate and can be redeemed as a per-gallon discount on future fill-ups. The app also surfaces flash rewards offering $0.10 to $0.20/gal discounts for a limited window. Works at all BP and Amoco stations.
ExxonMobil
Exxon Mobil Rewards+- Base discount
- 3 points per gallon of regular fuel
- Bonus potential
- Up to 9 points per gallon on premium
Points are earned per gallon and per in-store dollar spent. Every 100 points earns $0.01/gal off a future fill-up. Special promotions double or triple points during qualifying periods. The Rewards+ Mastercard earns extra points and can be used anywhere Mastercard is accepted.
Chevron / Texaco
Techron Advantage- Base discount
- 6 cents per gallon at Chevron and Texaco

- Periodic bonus offers via the app
The Techron Advantage card is a co-branded store card usable only at Chevron and Texaco. The 6 cents per gallon discount applies automatically. Using a general cash-back gas credit card at Chevron earns your credit card rate in addition to standard Techron pricing, but the Techron card itself restricts use to these two brands.
Unbranded and Independent Stations
Independent stations have no branded loyalty program, but can still be the cheapest option when you factor in base price and full credit card rewards.
Lower base pump price
Unbranded or independent stations often price regular gasoline $0.05 to $0.20 per gallon below major branded stations in the same area. On a 15-gallon fill-up, that saves $0.75 to $3.00 per visit before any credit card rewards.
Full credit card rewards still apply
Most credit cards apply the gas bonus rate based on the merchant category code (MCC), not the brand name. An independent station with the correct fuel retailer MCC earns the same 3% to 5% credit card reward as a major branded station. Combined with a lower base price, you can save more total.
No loyalty lock-in
Unbranded stations have no membership program tying you to one brand. This flexibility lets you use price apps like GasBuddy to find the cheapest station and pay with your best rewards card regardless of brand.
Fuel quality is regulated
All fuel sold in the US must meet minimum EPA and ASTM standards regardless of brand. Unbranded stations purchase from the same terminals as branded stations in most regions. The primary difference is whether the fuel includes the brand's proprietary detergent additive package, not base fuel quality.
Warehouse clubs: cheapest price but check your card
Costco, BJ's, and Sam's Club typically price fuel $0.10 to $0.30 per gallon below street prices. For a household filling two cars totaling 40 gallons per week, that difference saves $208 to $624 per year. However, most credit cards do not apply the gas bonus rate at warehouse clubs because these merchants use a wholesale club MCC rather than a fuel station MCC. Verify your card's coverage before assuming you earn both the price discount and the full gas reward rate. Some cards, like warehouse-affiliated co-branded cards, do earn bonus rates at these locations.

Why merchant category codes determine your reward rate
Credit card networks classify every merchant by a four-digit merchant category code (MCC). Gas stations are typically coded 5541 (service stations) or 5542 (automated fuel dispensers). Your gas rewards card applies the bonus rate only when the charge carries one of these codes.
If you fill up at a convenience store that primarily sells groceries and incidentally has pumps, it may be coded as a grocery or convenience store MCC, and your card would earn the base rate rather than the gas rate. The same applies to fuel purchased inside a Walmart or Target.
If you notice that a gas purchase is not earning your expected reward rate, call the number on the back of your card, provide the merchant name and transaction date, and ask the issuer to confirm the MCC for that transaction. Some issuers can escalate an MCC mis-classification for future transactions.
